Abby and Aaron : A Crosstown Concourse and Brooks Museum Forever Session

Abby and Aaron : A Crosstown Concourse and Brooks Museum Forever Session

When you are around Abby and Aaron the world is a brighter place. They each bring joy to everything they are involved in and when you put their forces together, the room they are in simply lights up.

We’ve gotten to know Aaron over the past couple years through his job as the sound guy at our church. Every time we were around him we loved the discussions we would have and we loved how incredibly chill he is. And then one day he told us that he had proposed to his girlfriend of 8 years and all the sudden when saw an entirely different side of him. Previously he had been pretty private about Abby but after the engagement his eyes simply sparkled every time he talked about her. There is something deeply special when a relationship moved from dating to engagement and you could see that in Aaron!!

And then we got to meet Abby and we fully understood why Aaron was so excited to get to spend the rest of his life with her! Abby is the perfect definition of joy. Her heart is the size of an elephant and you can see that coming out especially in her love for animals. The compassion she gives to rescued animals speaks volumes of her compassion for the world. There is a tenderness in her eyes and her smile is completely contagious!

Having been together for eight years, these two have seen each other grow and develop into the person they want to spend the rest of life with. For Abby, she has seen Aaron open up and reveal a sensitive side that means the world to her. Through deep conversations, getting excited about her new business, and even just crying together in sad movies, he has opened his life up to her and let her in. He has given up a few preconceived ideas about indoor pets and he too gets joy from the souls of animals. It might be a simple thing about this has shown Abby that he feels comfortable, safe, and not judged around her; it speaks volumes to their trust level!

For both Aaron and Abby moving to Memphis about four years ago was a huge step in their relationship and deciding their future. Aaron was leaving his home state and Abby was returning to hers. For Abby, seeing Aaron willing to embrace a period of being uncomfortable in a new location and then seeing him turn it into a place of thriving sealed the deal for her. These life situations showed them that together they could handle anything that they encountered.

One of the things we love most about Abby and Aaron is that like us, they are old souls at heart. In their relationship they have the freedom to take turns being the old soul and this allows the other to have inner child moments. This freedom to let the inner child out if so necessary and it gives life to both side of the relationship…

We could go on and on about these two and we’ll just have to see some of that for their wedding blog post! We had one of the best afternoons with these two during their Forever Session. Abby told me that they treated the day of their session like a holiday and we fully stand behind this idea! They made the entire day about them and their relationship! From brunch together, to getting ready, to listening to a special playlist, to the actual session, to dinner and cocktails after, they spent the day celebrating their love! The next day Abby texted me and told me how magical the day felt and that it was absolutely perfect! And here is the kicker, we had to scratch the original plans of their session due to rain and they not only rolled with it, they fully embraced it! When the weather was 100% rain, they said heck yes we are going to play in the rain! And we did! We started at the Crosstown Concourse and then literally played and danced in the rain at The Brooks. Watching these two laugh and live their best life in the pouring rain was the best! Knowing we got to play a little role in this magical day for them is what we live for!

Cheers,

Savannah and Philip

Mollee and Will- A Memphis Botanic Gardens Fall Engagement Session

Mollee and Will- A Memphis Botanic Gardens Fall Engagement Session

Kindness is what drew Mollee to Will. They were working together at Regional One, Mollee as a nurse and Will as a neurosurgeon intern, and she got to see firsthand his kindness towards his patients and their families. Will’s bedside manor, and his adorable smile, peaked Mollee’s interest and with the help of a few fellow nurses they started dating. Over the last five years Mollee has continued to see Will’s kind loving heart in action and she has fallen more and more in love with him! When one of Mollee’s family members suffered from a stroke, Will went out of his way to help make her family feel comfortable, know clearly what was going on, and help bring clarity and peace in a not so fun time. Seeing him love on her extended family this way helped solidify the reasons she loved Will!

And for Will, Mollee fit into his life like a perfect puzzle piece. She completely understands his crazy schedule with work and they can talk shop together, with both of them caring about the other’s job. Mollee has taught Will how to slow own and be present in life. With a fast paced job of being a neurosurgeon, he needs her partnership to help bring him calmness. Mollee’s beauty is only trumped by her showing of unconditional support for him!

Together they simply love the small moments together. Because of their careers they are both pretty independent but they love stealing quiet moments together! A night at home watching a movie brings just as much joy as a night out on the town. They have the freedom to be silly and playful together because their relationship is rooted in the fact that they are friends first!

We absolutely adore these two and their huge hearts! It takes a special calling to be a trauma nurse and a neurosurgeon but together these two are helping save the lives of those who need it most!

Cheers,

Brooke and Michael- A Memphis Fire Station Engagement Session

Brooke and Michael- A Memphis Fire Station Engagement Session

Brooke and Michael have an amazing relationship! It is one that is based in mutual deep trust. Because of this trust in one another there is an ease to their relationship and freedom with one another. One of the reasons trust is so important to them is their work schedules are kind of crazy with Brooke being a night shift nurse and Michael is a Memphis firefighter.

These two wanted to incorporate their careers into their forever session and we are so glad they did! We got to do part of their session at Michael’s fire station and it was pretty cool to get to see the ins and outs of the station. With all the fires raging in California right now (and we have a family member who had to evacuate), we have so much more respect for Michael and his fellow fire fighters. He willingly puts his own life at risk to help save others! Seeing his helmet you can see singe marks and dents from falling embers. It is humbling to know that every shift Michael goes on, to protect others, Brooke is back home praying he makes it back safely. And Brookes caring nature gets to come out in her nursing career! Both spend their careers giving to others and that selfless nature shows up strongly in their own relationship!

It was so much fun getting to spend the afternoon with these two and we can’t wait for their upcoming wedding!

Top Ten Engagement Session Locations in Memphis

“So where should we have our engagement session (we call it a Forever Session)?!” Is the question we get asked most from our couples, and we understand why. In Memphis, there are so many options! You have the Mississippi River and downtown. In midtown alone you can go to Overton Park or Cooper Young area or the Crosstown Concourse or Overton Square. And we haven’t even gotten to Shelby Farms, a Memphis gem, as well as the many outdoor places that have such a beautiful southern landscapes and moods.

Before we start though, there is one very important thing to take into account: who you are as a couple. This includes your story, personalities, and interests! We love to ask a simple question, “When you two have free time and want to get out of the house, what do you love to do?” Most answers from couples are usually about taking their dog to their park (which we LOVE dogs at engagement sessions!), or going out to try a new restaurant, etc. But the answer to that questions tells us whether you gravitate to the free, invigorating outdoors or the energetic, romantic city life. From there it becomes a lot easier to find your perfect spot for engagement photos in Memphis!

So don’t freak out! We have been doing this whole engagement photography thing in Memphis for a while now and know the best, most consistent places to get beautiful photos!

1. Beale Street Landing

From a great view of the Memphis skyline and bridge to a beautifully manicured, urban garden space, you can really get a little bit of everything Memphis out of Beale Street Landing. This urban park has some of the best sunsets we have seen over the Mississippi River were here! Plus the modern architecture will give your photos a sophisticated, yet fun feel. With a more dressy attire, it can really make your pictures stand out! This is for sure one of our favorite spots for downtown Memphis.

2. Harbor Town

Harbor Town is so much fun to shoot at because it is one part park by the Mississippi River and one part small town. The park features massive trees, open fields, and views of the river and bridge. The Park lends itself to spacious photos with depth, but really the star of Harbor Town is the town itself. It is quaint, well manicured, and feels homey while almost foreign to a typical Memphis scene. You can get lost in its mystique! Add in the numerous little parks nestled deep into the town, and you have a location with lots of options! Plus around the holidays the town is decorated with tons of Christmas lights and we love the magic that comes from twinkle lights!

3. Shelby Farms Park

We don’t play favorites, but if we did, Shelby Farms Park would be it 🙂 No, it is not downtown nor has any strong Memphis landmarks (beyond the park itself being a haven for many Memphians). What Shelby Farms does have is the most unique landscape in Memphis. If you want outdoor photos, this is THE place in our opinion. The Hyde Lake area is a top notch urban park and the Uplands are a perfect place to feel like you are in the wild (with your dog off leash too!) And, if you like sunsets, Shelby Farms have the best in Memphis without a doubt!

4. Main Street

Main Street is one of the most popular places to have an engagement session in Memphis, and for good reason. South Main Street has a great feel with the shops, restaurants, and trolley! But to be honest our favorite part of Main Street is closer to the central part of downtown. This part of downtown feels the most like a bigger city. A great mixture of modern and old buildings, brick sidewalks, and ornamental street lamps will really give your session a romantic, “night out on the town” feel! Plus you are a simple walk to the river where you can get a lot of beautiful sunset photos if the weather is right!

5. Somewhere Personal to You

For us, this is should be the first consideration at all possible. This engagement session is about YOU so we love to learn what is a place to you as a couple that is special. It could be where you got engaged, your first date location, or even your home! These type of engagement sessions always make you the most relaxed and in the right mood. Happy memories means happy smiles! Plus, it keeps the photos authentic to who you are as a couple. We, as photographers, LOVE it when we get to photograph a couple in a meaningful location. It truly is the best!

6. Overton Park

Overton Park is a midtown staple. It’s variety of locations is almost endless – Brooks Museum, Levitt Shell, the old Memphis College of Art, the beautiful parks – so you can really get a bunch of different looks from your session! One thing, as photographers, we really enjoy about Overton Park is the light quality. There is so much variety in light because it is wooded enough that you can find beautiful beams of light to really give extra interest and depth to your photos. We are always happy when we get to shoot there!

7. Crosstown Concourse

If industrial, modern, and indoors is your thing then nothing beats Crosstown Concourse! This walkable community is truly a photographer’s dream. So many little vignettes and scenes can be found there. The Atriums are vast and industrial, the art space is modern, and the reading nook is just so much fun! If you have more modern tastes and prefer indoors, then this is a great place to have your engagement session in Memphis!

8. Botanic Gardens

Okay, so this one is pretty obvious. Flowers, beautiful gardens, and outdoors. But seriously, the Botanic Gardens offer some of the best vistas in Memphis. Since it is sectioned out into numerous gardens, we always have fun exploring with our couples and finding what the next turn has in store because every time we have shot there we found a new favorite place. It never disappoints. Make sure your photographer has a professional membership there though – otherwise they will kick you to the curb!

9. The Peabody

Yes, there are ducks, and yes they are cute! Beyond those little guys you will find a stunning lobby that feels like from another time. It oozes romance! The lighting is just right, the wood is warm, and the feel is grand. If you like to dress up and enjoy the town, then the Peabody totally lends itself to dressy attire. Our dream is to one day have the whole place to ourselves, but we have gotten really good at making your photos feel like you are the only two in the world!

10. Cooper Young District

When Memphians think of midtown Memphis, most think of the Cooper Young District. It’s funky. Artsy. The home of so many Memphis staples. This is such a great place to really show off your personalities because it already has so much personality. From murals to fun bars to even small parks, you can really have freedom to find a location that accentuates who you are as a couple. We always have fun exploring this area with couples and make fun photos for them!

Obviously, this is not an extensive list but it should be a great place to start for your engagement session planning in Memphis! If you have any questions, please post it in the comments and we will try our best to answer it for you!

Cheers!

Chandler & Frank : A Sunset Forever Session at Shelby Farms

Chandler & Frank : A Sunset Forever Session at Shelby Farms

We had the best time with Chandler and Frank for their Forever Session! The weather was relatively cool for a typical summer night in Memphis. And we loved that they wanted to have the session at Shelby Farms Park! In our opinion, there is no better place to photograph an evening session in Memphis. The sunsets are almost always magical, it is so dog friendly (because we always want to photograph your dog!), and there is so much space that it is always easy to find something fun and new in those fields. And it turned out to be just a great evening filled with wonderful light and lovely connection between these two.

What we love about Chandler and Frank is not only their easy going personalities but also their open relationship. And what we mean by that is that there are no guarded walls between them. They both told us that they feel accepted and listened to when they are with each other. They value one another’s opinions and views on their life. There is a teamwork aspect to their relationship that feels natural and organic. And each of them bring their own impact to their relationship!

Chandler loves the security and trust that Frank brings to her world. Frank is always looking out for Chandler’s needs! Whether it is a simple compliment or his uncanny ability to predict what she needs ahead of time, that love and care brings that trust and security to her life. She knows she is his and that breeds confidence in her own life. As their relationship grows and continues so does that confidence. And with that confidence Chandler is more free to be herself. It’s a beautiful gift that Frank selflessly gives Chandler!

And for Frank, Chandler is always present for him. From naturally getting along with his friends to giving Frank the space to be himself, Chandler gives Frank maybe the best gift that anyone can give another person – total acceptance. Frank told us that Chandler has never asked him to be something he is not. Even when days are hard, he is able to unload to a welcoming and listening Chandler. This gives him that confidence and love for her, which in turn brings more security and trust to Chandler. Their relationship is a beautiful circle of confirmation.

And it was also amazing to Belle there! Belle, their sweet Beagle, kind of stole the show while she was around. Belle is a great example of their teamwork mentality to their relationship. They both get to tackle that responsibility together. And they love having that shared best friend in Belle! Plus, Beagle’s are just so dang cute! How can you not love having such a beautiful energy around?

Chandler and Frank, thanks so much for letting us in to capture your wonderful relationship! We cannot wait for your wedding that’s just around the corner!

Cheers,

Savannah and Philip

Katherine and Levi : An Oxford Forever Session

Katherine and Levi : An Oxford Forever Session

We love to be able to make a Forever Session tailored made for the couple. And after talking with Levi and Katherine, we all found the perfect solution: Oxford, MS. They both went to Ole Miss for college but never really met. But they connected, through mutual friends, at an Ole Miss football game, and have been with each other ever since. So of course we had to take photos at the Grove, the Oxford Square, and, most importantly, the bar where they became more than acquaintances during that football game. Needless to say, that little town has a big part in their history. And another big part of their history is actually part of ours as well!

You see, we photographed the wedding of Levi’s twin brother, Clay. It turns out Clay’s wife, Kim, was pulling for this relationship for a while too! It’s really fun to continue with a family in their milestones! But what is really great is to get to know Levi as well as we have gotten to know Clay. That is thanks to Katherine. When we called her for her discovery call we found out just what makes Levi the perfect guy for her. He is a driven, ambitious guy without being stuffy about it. And from day one he was ambitiously pursuing her! Levi, himself, even mentioned how fun it is to pursue her and continue to actively chase after her affection. They do this mainly through creating good times with one another as much as possible. For them that could be an evening in or out. It is not about the activity, it’s about the company. For both of them, it just works.

They both mentioned how they feel so comfortable around one another. This is why Levi has believed in their relationship from the beginning! And this constant faith in her is what Katherine loves most about him. He is so encouraging and attentive towards her. And he encourages her to be herself. So much so that she said, “I learned to like myself the way he does.” That perspective and honest love he offers her everyday is the best gift he can give her – a type A, too-hard-on-yourself type of person.

For Levi, he will openly admit that Katherine makes him a better person. Her heart of service is infectious. She is selfless by default. She wants to be present with the people she is with and desires the same from others. All of these things have rubbed off on Levi a little bit and have given him greater stability in his life. Maybe better put, a since of purpose. He wants to give her the best because she is the best. Someone so kind, selfless, and driven is someone worth holding onto and cherishing.

Now, last but certainly not least. Livy. Cutest dog on the planet? Quite possibly. She is Katherine’s sweet heart, and turned Levi into a small dog type of guy. We get how powerful a presence a dog can be and it is very true with Livy. She’s got energy and spunk to chase around the squirrels on the Grove, and the sweetness to sit in your lap and be that loyal companion. We loved having Livy around for the session!

Now on to the photos!
